Indoor Football Game

One of the things that I always try to be aware of whenever we have kids at a get-together is whether or not they will have something to do to keep them busy. I love coming up with crafts, projects, and games for them to do. With all of the football viewing parties that are going on, you should bring this DIY indoor football game for the kids to try out. You’ll be the coolest aunt/uncle/relative/friend EVER!
The setup is part of the fun. (To be honest, I would rather play this game than watch the game that is being played on the TV 🙂 ) There are four main parts to make for the game; the field, the goal posts, the refs, and the football. Start with a green disposable table cloth from Walmart. Next, use some white Scotch® Expressions glitter washi tape to mark off your sidelines and yard lines. I used a kid sized table, so I only needed three yard lines added to my field.
Next, you’ll want to mark points on each of the yard lines. I used the 15MM Black Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape to make some simple numbers. The basic idea is that you can get those points by flicking the origami football from the particular yard line.
Of course, you can’t play football without referees. I did a quick google search for a shirt silhouette and then printed out a few of them. Then, I grabbed my Scotch® Expressions Washi Black Stripe and added it to the back of the paper with the shirt printed on it. After I added the tape, I cut out the shirt pattern and ta-da! I have a striped referee shirt with little to no work.
After the shirt is all cut out, use some Scotch® Create Double-sided Tape to attach the shirt to a tongue depressor. I created a base to the refs by cutting off the stick below the shirt and then cutting a little slit in the middle of that stick. With the part you cut off, cut a slit in the middle of that one as well and then slide them together. If you create an “X” with the two sticks, it makes a perfect base to help the refs stand up.
To make the goal post, I used popsicle sticks from the craft area at Walmart (right next to where the Scotch® Expressions tapes are found.) The base was made with tongue depressor sized sticks, and also thin craft sticks for the top of the goal post. I held it all together with some Scotch® Expressions White Glitter Tape. If you wrap it around the sticks tightly, it will hold it in place really well. To create the base, you will use the same basic idea that the refs use. Just cut a slit in the middle of the two sticks and put them together to create an “X”.
The last, but most important part of the indoor football game? The Football! I used this easy to follow tutorial for how to make an origami football. I used an orange cardstock to create the football, and a sharpie to add the details.
All you have to do is hold the football with one finger on one hand, and with the other hand, flick the back of the football towards the goal post. If you make it through the middle, you get the amount of points from the yard line you flicked it from. If you miss, your turn is over and you don’t get points.
