Digging For Worms

In my daughter’s class, they like to celebrate the holidays with a class party. With Easter being so early this year, the Easter party was changed to a Spring party since it is being held after Easter is over so that the parties weren’t so close together. I love going into the classroom to help out with the different activities, and I had a lot of fun coming up with a game idea to go along with the Spring theme. I thought it would be fun to do a digging for worms activity since spring is all about cleaning up flower beds, planting flowers, and worms.

The thing that makes this such a great party game is the competition aspect of it. Set a timer for 10 seconds and tell the kids to take turns one at a time to see how many worms they can dig up in that time. The kid with the most worms in 10 seconds is the winner. It is a lot harder than it looks to find the worms. The beads feel a lot like the beans, but that makes it even more of a fun challenge for the kids.

Putting all of this together is really so simple that my four year old did it. No really. She made most of the worms. She is my very best helper and loves doing projects with me. She also did a video tutorial of herself making the worms that I may post over on Instagram because it is super cute, especially when she tells you that it’s kind of tricky. 🙂

You’ll need pony beads and pipe cleaner to get started. Each worm uses 13 beads and one pipe cleaner. All you need to do is put the two ends of the pipe cleaner together, string a pony bead onto both ends together, and then push it up until it is about an inch from the top. Then put the remaining 12 beads onto the pipe cleaner. Once you get to the end, you’ll fold the ends back into the last bead and then twist it so that there aren’t any exposed sharp ends, and so that the beads won’t be able to come back off.

All that is left to do is to grab a bucket or container of some kind, and then fill it with beans or rice. Add the worms in as you add the beans, and it makes it even harder to find the worms. Also, if you put some of them standing vertical along the side, it makes it harder to find as well. I hope you give this a try!
